Science as Art Series I:
View in the Microscope
“Amoeba" is based on Kandinsky's painting "Stars." However, it looks so much like an amoeba that I call this one "Amoeba."
"COVID-Killers” was created during the pandemic when I vaccinated hundreds of people against COVID. It is based on electron micrographic images of five types of antibodies which are attacking coronavirus particles to neutralize it. It made me happy to think that we were winning! This quilt was juried into the Wall Quilt Competition at the Mancuso Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival and shown in Hampton, Virginia from 2/28/2024-3/3/2024.
“Plastic Eaters” demonstrates how a bacterium secretes enzymes which degrade plastic ((Poly)ethylene Terephthalate (PET)) into usable energy sources. The bacterium was discovered in sewage treatment plants and nearby soil. Since its discovery, scientists have induced mutations to enhance its ability and speed of degradation of plastics. This process, called “bioremediation” is an exciting addition to solving our growing plastic waste pollution dilemma. This quilt will be shown at the American Geophysical Union meeting in-person in Washington D.C., Dec. 9-13, 2024 and online.
