Art Quilts Inspired by Other Artists

"En Plein Air" was inspired by Joan Miro's "L'Air." I find his paintings a bit cluttered, so I simplified the elements a bit. I also preferred to use metallic black fibers instead of the solid black patches of the original painting.

"Cliffs" was inspired by Helen Frankenthaler's "Mountains and Sea." This quilt is featured in the book Views of Virginia, (High Tide Publications), 2023. It was shown at the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo in Fredericksburg, VA in September, 2024 at an exhibit of "Inspired by..." by Art Quilt Tribe.
It was shown most recently at the Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center in the exhibit "Art Inspired by Poetry" from September 17-October 31, 2025. I embroidered a senryu on the right-hand side which reads...
atop cliffs
listening to waves
echo your goodbye

"Blue Rider" was inspired by Vassily Kandinsky's 1911 painting of the same name. This quilt was featured in an exhibit by Art Quilt Tribe at the Mancuso Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival in 2021. It is currently on display at the Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center as part of the "Art Inspired by Poetry" with a poem written by me called "The Blue Rider.'
